CLUB HISTORY


 

1975

  • Applied for and received a $10,000 Federal Grant to start Club
  • 28 local professional and lay-persons were assembled to form a governing body
  • Certificate of Incorporation was applied for with the Department of Commerce
  • Tackle football program was started in the fall
  • Wrestling program organized in the winter
  • Club membership:  approximately 100 members

 

1976

  • Received Certificate of Incorporation on March 10, 1976
  • Lease acquired from City of Lebanon for the southwest corner of Century Park to construct a Clubhouse
  • A fund drive was started and construction of clubhouse began in June 1976
  • Club membership: approximately 150 members

 

1977

  • New program added
  • Basketball
  • The Clubhouse was dedicated in August
  • A full-time secretary position with a CETA grant was filled
  • Club membership: approximately 250 members

 

1978

  • New Programs:
    • Summer Baseball
    • Summer Softball
  • A Datsun pickup was acquired for Club use
  • The Club received a pool table and air hockey machine for the game room
  • Club membership:  approximately 530 members



1979

  • The Club became an agency of United Way, receiving $13,000
  • New Program:
    • Fall soccer (with 6 teams/72 participants)
  • Initiated a Program Committee
  • Selected a committee to investigate possible procurement of land and funds from local and state foundations
  • High School and Middle School surveyed for interests
  • Clubhouse exterior and interior painted, bathrooms renovated, new signs added to exterior of building
  • Bookkeeping systems and books computerized at Eskeldson & Bishop, CPA's
  • Club membership: approximately 640 members

 

1986

  • New programs:
    • Summer Tennis
    • 3rd-6th Grade Track
  • Initiated Finance Committee
  • 3rd Annual Auction netted $14,000.00
  • Youth of the Year Scholarships Award Winners- Todd Perimon and Mike Belcher (Local Winner, Regional finalist)
  • 4th Annual Youth Partnership Drive approx. $14,500.00

 


1987

  • New Program:
    • Spring Indoor Soccer
  • Letter Writing Club
  • 3rd-6th Grade Youth Choir
  • 4th Annual Auction netted $19,000.00
  • Youth of the Year Scholarship Award Winners-Mike Phelps and Tracy Turner
  • Club Membership-930 approx.
  • 5th Annual Youth Partnership Drive approx. $17,300.00

 

 

1988

  • 5th Annual Auction netting $25,600.00
  • Youth of the Year-Cyndia Engstrom; and Chad McBride (Local, State Regional winner; National finalist)
  • Chad McBride and Ron Graves flew to Washington D.C. to participate in the National Youth of the Year Competition and met President Ronald Reagan
  • New Programs:
    • 16-18 High School Girls Softball
    • Kids Flea Market
    • Bicycle Safety Week
    • T-ball for the Handicapped, ages 6-12
  • Club membership:  approximately  980
  • The Board of Directors voted to proceed with a feasibility study to determine the financial strength the Club would have
  • if they should decide to participate in a capital campaign to build a new Boys & Girls Club/Community Center. (1/25/88}
  • The ‘Board Family’ Campaign received the first pledges totaling $26,000.
  • Club office bought its first computer.
  • The Board Development Committee was formed to recruit additional board members

 

1989

  • The Capital Campaign Kick-off luncheon was held Wednesday, March 1st at  Pineway Restaurant
  • Lottery winner, R.F. Sinclair makes generous donation to the Club to be used to fund program and membership scholarships
  • Kari Rose won the State Youth of the Year Competition (Katrina Phillips was our second local scholarship recipient)
  • Record attendance at Board of Directors meeting with 24 members. The board voted on their recommendations for new awards they would present at the 1990 Annual Dinner. These were: Board Member of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Life-time Service, and Volunteer of the Year (Non Board).
  • Capital Campaign pledges $753,420 by the end of the year

 

1992

  • The 1st Youth Partnership Breakfast was held in the gym on January 18th with guest speaker, Neil Lomax, former quarterback for St. Louis Cardinals of the NFL
  • The new Boys & Girls Club foundation held it’s first meeting in March at the Pineway Restaurant for 14 prospective trustees
  • The Club began its first Free Lunch Program in the new building, serving up to 110 youth a day throughout the summer
  • Greg Holden from Portland, Oregon was hired as the new Athletic Director.  Sedonia Gentry accepted a new challenge as the club’s Program Director
  • The Club hosted Discovery Day for Children’s Week in cooperation with the Lebanon    Police Department and Lebanon Branch of Adult & Family Services
  • Grand Opening ceremonies, an Open House, and a high school dance were held the 1st  weekend in December to celebrate the beginning of a dream come true

 

2009

  • The Boys & Girls Club of Lebanon and the Boys & Girls Club of Sweet Home unified into the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater Santiam
